Gear Review: Deps Bull Flat

WHAT IS IT?

Deps Bull Flat Creature Bait

WHAT SETS IT APART?

The unique action of the Bull Flat presents an action to pressured bass the likes of which they’ve not seen. Like many Deps creations, the Bull Flat is made with a proprietary plastic formulated with a crawfish scent, while maintaining the balance of desired natural softness and durability. Lifelike arms imitate a bluegill’s fins, and the ribbed body transmits lifelike vibrations. Sizes: 3, 3.8 and 4.8 inch sizes. Available in 17 colors.

HOW DO I USE IT?

You get two lifelike options when presenting this go-to bait to wary bass; either way, the Bull Flat is designed to imitate a dying bluegill to present an easy meal for a largemouth. You can adjust the fall rate to the prevailing feeding conditions. Add a weight and the highly buoyant plastic creates a slow, spiral-of-death action. On a steady retrieve the bellows-shaped tail presents a natural swimming action.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

On first glance, this bait might look like a flattened soft plastic beaver. Looks are deceiving, as the Bull Flat is designed to have the same swimming profile as a bluegill. The action alone is worthy of adding it to your go-to box when all else fails, and you can rig it weightless and Texas-rigged on a Carolina rig. While shad-shaped imitating crankbaits and soft plastic swimbaits are the prevailing mindset of forage choices by anglers, the Bull Flat reminds us that bass also feast on bluegill. And that forage follows a similar spawning cycle pattern as bass, beginning in spring in shallow water, and later on in deeper water around brushpiles.
