Gear Review: Lew’s Accel RX Casting Reel

WHAT IS IT?

Lew’s Accel RX Casting Reel

WHAT SETS IT APART?

The standout feature of the Accel RX is Lew’s ParaMag RX braking system. The radial paramagnetic system uses internal magnets to apply braking force across the spool without physical contact, creating a smooth and controlled casting experience.

That added control can help reduce backlashes and make the reel more forgiving, particularly for anglers who are still getting comfortable with a baitcaster.

Inside the lightweight graphite frame are Hamai CNC brass Speed Gears designed to provide smooth cranking power and durability when fishing under load. The Accel RX also features a 5+1 bearing system with five double-shielded stainless steel ball bearings and a zero-reverse one-way clutch bearing for a smooth retrieve.

The compact 32mm anodized spool helps keep the reel’s profile low and comfortable in the hand. A built-in Knot Slot allows the line to tie off flush against the spool core for clean line lay and secure knot seating.

The Accel RX’s ergonomics are another benefit. Its compact, low-profile frame can be particularly useful for women, younger anglers or anyone with smaller hands who may experience fatigue when fishing larger baitcasting reels for extended periods. The 95mm bowed aluminum handle provides added leverage when working a fish out of cover.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Accel RX is designed to be a versatile baitcasting reel that can handle a wide variety of bass fishing techniques.

The adjustable ParaMag RX braking system allows anglers to fine-tune spool control based on lure weight, wind conditions and individual casting style. Anglers newer to baitcasting can start with more braking to help control the spool and reduce backlashes, then gradually decrease the braking as they become more comfortable.

Its lightweight, low-profile design also makes it well suited for long days of casting when comfort becomes increasingly important.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

I’ve tried a lot of different reels over the years, and for under $100, this one is more than ideal for just about any angler.

There are plenty of specs that make a reel sound great on paper, but the Accel RX has backed them up on the water. I’ve put this reel to the test in different conditions all over the country, and what stands out to me is how smooth and user-friendly it is.

The ParaMag RX braking system makes casting easy to control and helps prevent the kind of frustrating backlashes that can derail a day of fishing. Nobody wants to spend their time picking out a bird’s nest that looks like it could house a family of egrets.

The smaller profile is another big advantage. At just 6.8 ounces, it fits comfortably in my hand and doesn’t feel bulky after hours of casting. For female anglers, younger competitors or anyone who prefers a smaller reel, that comfort can make a big difference during an eight-hour tournament day.

Most importantly, it gives you the durability and performance you need without requiring a major investment. Whether you’re building your first tournament setup or adding another dependable reel to the front deck, the Accel RX gives you plenty of bang for your buck.
