Gear Review: D-Style Geelacanth

WHAT IS IT?

D-Style Geelacanth

WHAT SETS IT APART?

A popular JDM bait, now distributed to U.S. markets by SPRO, the D-Style Geelacanth made its official debut at the 2026 Bassmaster Classic Outdoor Expo, but pros in the know have been tinkering with this incredibly lifelike bait since last year. Made of durable elastomer material, this highly responsive bait has a realistic bluegill face with molded features, and an internal core sprouting ribs top and bottom. Each rib is topped with sensitive antennae, which wiggle enticingly with the slightest of movement or current.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Offered in 3- and 4-inch sizes, the Geelacanth is built with a VIROLA tail capable of generating strong action with aggressive retrieves, or a more subdued motion for pressured fish. A diverse bait that can fit shallow or deep scenarios, and a variety of habitats from grass to sand to brush, the Geelacanth is a natural for the free rig. The bait includes a pre-molded hole in the chin for a nail weight, which holds the Geelacanth in an upright posture. Other rigging options include a Neko rig, Carolina rig, Texas rig and wobble head presentation.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Bassmaster Elite pro Bryan New, one of the first to embrace this bait, said he had three different Geelacanth rigs tied on for the Bassmaster Classic. For him the main appeal is the liveliness. One tip New offers involves nail weight options. He’s a fan of the Gamakatsu TK Trigger Nail Weight. It’s a sharp-nose design which easily penetrates Elastomer, while the thin wire barbs help hold its position inside the bait.
