WHAT IS IT?
AFTCO Breakwater Waterproof Gloves
WHAT SETS IT APART?
A 100% waterproof membrane delivers total protection in cold, wet or windy conditions. Touchscreen compatible for use with smartphones, fish finders and other screened electronics. Four-way stretch fabric for complete flexibility with fingers for casting, with integrated nonslip, grippy rubber composite for holding and keeping reels in place.
HOW DO I USE IT?
The gloves are designed for extreme cold and wind. The compromise for bulky gloves for extreme chill protection can be a loss of mobility. Not so with the Breakwater Waterproof Gloves. Even with spinning reels often used for finessing lethargic cold-water bass, you can feather the line without any issues. The same for thumb-braking with a casting reel. There’s no loss of sensitivity in the hands, and the grippy palm is ideal for palming a casting reel.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:
I initially passed on the Breakwater Waterproof Gloves when first seeing them on the AFTCO website. They looked bulky and rightfully so for “extreme” weather gloves. I have those and consider the bulk part of the give-and-take for the necessary insulation, like other heavy outerwear.
Then, AFTCO sent me a pair to try out. I couldn’t have been more wrong. After putting them on they passed the hand and finger squeezing test for mobility. What also stood out were the integrated rubber composite strips integrated on the bottom of all five fingers, and the grippy palm-sized strips for palming a casting reel.
The ultimate test came on the water. I repeatedly submerged the gloves when landing fish and my hands were completely dry upon removing them. Bassmaster Elite pro Jason Christie in a video stuffed paper towels inside a glove, submersed it in water for five minutes, then removed the paper towel and lit it with a lighter. It went up in flames.
All the fishing applications are checked off. I’m also the Bassmaster drone pilot at our Elite events. Wearing the gloves I was able to make adjustments on the smart controller screen, something I’ve never done (or would think of doing) with any other gloves.
That makes it obvious why the Breakwater Waterproof Gloves have already sold out once. I’ll be wearing mine on the water and off.
