Gear Review: Strike King Pad Perch

What is it?

Strike King Pad Perch

What sets it apart?

This is a pretty easy question to answer. Look at it. Is it a frog? Is it a fish? It’s both. It’s some sort of wild combination, and it works. Designed by Greg Hackney, the narrow nose of the bait is built to force its way through the muckiest cover you can find. This is the kind of bait that goes where the bass live.

How do I use it?

Since the bait is similar to a hollow-bodied frog, you can definitely fish it like that. It’s not a popping bait, but a varied retrieve or slow retrieve may be necessary to trigger any picky eaters you are targeting. But most of the time, it’s a fast retrieve, mimicking a wounded fish on the top of the water — an irresistable snack for bass.

Angler’s Insight:

If you have a frog bite where you live, maybe this is just the change you need to really surprise them one morning. It’s built like a frog, with a collapsible body and double hook, and if you’ve ever caught a fish with one, you know it may just be the most fun you can have on your boat. As someone who inevitably gets their frog stuck in something gross, I appreciate the pointed front of this bait and think it will help push through even the heaviest cover.
