Gear Review: Scum Frog Launch Frog

What is it?

Scum Frog Launch Frog

What sets it apart?

Boasting the highest compression rate among topwater frogs, the designers at Scum Frog set out to maximize hook-up ratio and castability. What they came up with was a wide-body bait dressed with hand-designed, digitally-painted color patterns, premium 40-strand silicone skirt tails and an Owner 9 Series Red Hook. The latter’s ultra-sharp design and unique hook angle give this bait a serious bite and a tenacious retention. And with the soft body’s renowned compression, those hooks achieve maximum exposure when a fish bites.

How do I use it?

Available in eight colors, the Launch Frog features a Parasite Tungsten Weight System, which attaches to the shank of the hook with integrated locking tabs that prevent movement during strenuous casts and/or fish catches. This system increases the frog’s weight without adding bulk, while also optimizing the frog’s balance during a cast and the presentation across the water. A brass button tail weight also assists with casting and keeps the Launch Frog in a nose-up posture for easy walking.

Angler’s insight:

Lee Livesay recently won his first Elite trophy primarily on the Scum Frog Launch Frog. His strategy centered on sneaking deep into grass mats and making super long casts to reach untouched areas where quality fish were holding. Livesay’s Elite-level demands compelled him to modify his bait by adding tungsten weights to the interior, but Scum Frog has designed a bait that performs well right out of the package. The long-cast design with a highly compressible body and a fish-snaring double hook looks like a formidable profile.
