Gear Review: Mustad TitanX Wacky/Neko Hook

What is it?

Mustad TitanX Wacky/Neko Hook

What sets it apart?

A fine wire UltraPoint wide gap hook, Mustad’s Number 60403NP-TX features a sproat bend, which comes off the shank like a round bend, but narrows and straightens on the point side for better hook sets and stronger holds. Also contributing to these benefits is the the hook point length of 4.8 times the wire diameter (compared to Mustad’s standard 4.3 length). This yields greater penetration, which maximizes every bite. Like all Mustad hooks, the TitanX boasts Micro Point Technology, which maximizes sharpness, while the custom steel alloy wire is Nor-Tempered for superior strength.

How do I use it?

Mustad coats these hooks with its new TitanX Finish for a non-reflective, neutral look that won’t spook fish in clear conditions. Corrosion-resistant, this slick finish further bolsters hook penetration. Made for multiple techniques from wacky to Neko to dropshot, the TitanX hook’s long shank affords greater separation from the main line — particularly helpful with the latter presentation. Available in sizes 6-2/0, the hook’s spacious shank accommodates wire or moldable weight, as well as a weed guard.

Angler’s insight:

Suffice it to say that it’s not easy to impress Kevin VanDam, but after seeing a few samples at ICAST, the four-time Classic winner was so convinced by the Titan design that he took it to the St. Lawrence River and used this hook to notch a dominant wire-to-wire victory. The ability to quickly stick big brownies with a finesse hook and then keep them buttoned during the ensuing aerial antics can be a real difference-maker — as KVD proved.
