Gear Review: Shimano Stella FK

WHAT IS IT?

Shimano Stella FK

WHAT SETS IT APART?

The redesigned Stella FK boasts an impressive lineup of high-end features that you’d expect from this flagship reel family. One of the key elements here is the new InfinityXross system, which expands the drive gear tooth horizontally. This more efficiently disperses load between the drive gear and pinion gear. Also, the InfinityXross system maximizes gear durability by distributing contact points over a larger surface area, while the sturdy, lightweight magnesium HAGANE Body and a cold-forged HAGANE Gear ensure performance and dependability.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Stella FK’s Infinity Drive System uses a low-friction bushing that significantly decreases frictional resistance for smoother and more powerful winding, while Shimano’s proprietary main shaft surface treatment and advanced processing reduce rotational torque to keep the reel winding even under heavy loads. Other features include Shimano’s new DuraCross drag system for consistently stopping long runs; MicroModule II gear tooth refinements and SilentDrive system for smooth, quiet reeling; and water resistance through Shimano’s X-Protect system and shielded S A-RB bearings.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Notwithstanding Shimano’s precision gearing and durability, one of the most impressive features of the Stella FK is the attention to line management. The new InfinityLoop line management system allows the spool to slowly move up and down to ensure a precise winding pattern with uniform and parallel wraps. Longer casts, smoother deliveries and an overall efficient system of moving line off and onto the spool streamlines the process and minimizes the time-consuming issues that arise from less controlled line. No more line sag between casts, and those annoying loops that suddenly sprout from the spool are a thing of the past. Less time picking, more time fishing.
