Gear Review: Mustad AlphaPoint Wide Gap

WHAT IS IT?

Mustad AlphaPoint Assault Wide Gap

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Designed to serve a wide range of soft-plastic presentations, all of which necessitate seamless hook sets, Mustad’s AlphaPoint Assault Wide Gap Hook sports an immediately distinctive look. With a resin-protected eye, the hook is made with an exaggerated offset Z bend that prevents soft plastics from slipping, even on hard casts and after missed strikes. Also, Mustad’s strategic Tak-bend allows larger baits ample space to sit flush to the hook and collapse on the bite for optimal hook sets.

HOW DO I USE IT?

From flukes to floating worms, and Carolina-rigged creature baits, the wide-gap hook plays many roles. The Mustad AlphaPoint Assault 4/0 Wide Gap Hook’s Tak-bend optimizes these presentations by placing the point above the eye, and therefore, more level with the bait. This improves the rigging process, whether the angler prefers an exposed hook point or skin hooking. Complementing this strategic form, Mustad’s ultra-slick TitanX matte coating further improves rigging and hook sets.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

In addition to the AlphaPoint Assault 4/0 Wide Gap Hook’s innovative form, Mustad bolsters this chemically sharpened needlepoint hook with design technologies that create a reliable piece of terminal tackle. First, the Nor-Tempered high-carbon alloy wire ensures the favorable balance of metal hardness, rigidity and thinness to reduce flex and hasten penetration. Also, using a three-stage Opti-Angle sharpening technology, the AlphaPoint design creates a hook point length 4.8 times the width of the 1X strong wire diameter. Bottom line: A longer, shallower point section allows for deeper and faster hook sets.
