Gear Review: Irish Setter Fifty

WHAT IS IT?

Irish Setter Fifty

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Here is a take on the original Irish Setter style that achieved iconic status in the 1950s. Updated with rich, supple full-grain leather for enhanced breathability and comfort. Leather sourced from tanneries with Gold Standard sustainability practices.

Cushin Comfort technology minimizes shin pressure from the top of the boot tongue. A four-way stretch nylon offers relief and flexibility while walking, and an internal padded waffle mesh maintains ultra comfort.

Extralight technology produces an incredible lightweight and durable outsole with excellent compression qualities.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The 6-inch boot combines classic styling — including the iconic white wedged sole and pinched moc stitching — with modern comfort-designed features. This is your boot for casual wear after a day of hunting, chores or fishing during cool fall or early winter days. Also available in women’s styles. Deep Taupe, Black, Mango, Brown. Regular and Wide fit. Sizes: 6-14.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Red Wing launched its 9-inch Irish Setter in 1950 as a lightweight boot for upland bird hunters with wedged — not raised heel — soles for quite movement. The Fifty reflects that early heritage while meeting a top demand among boot wearers in the category.

The Fifty checks both boxes for lighter weight and comfort. I immediately noticed how lightweight when unboxing the boots, which ideally fit into the casual wear category. Each boot weighs a little over 1 pound, 3 ounces.

I’ve found myself wearing the Fifty more and more. About the only break-in required is allowing the boots to conform to your feet for the perfect fit.

Irish Setter promotes the Fifty as camp boots after the hunt, chores or when changing out of heavier work boots. I prefer to add casual dress settings to the wardrobe choices. They look and feel good. What’s not to like about that?
