Gear Review: Gill Meridian X 2.0

WHAT IS IT?

Gill Meridian X 2.0 Rain Suit

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Elements of the newly updated Gill Meridian X 2.0 Jacket include bonded flaps on the top entry patch pockets, angled adjustable bonded cuff tabs (for more efficient adjustment) and bonded edges on the zippered chest pockets. Bib updates include a large cargo pocket on the right thigh with a bonded flap, an elasticated back waist with integrated hanging loop and angled Velcro ankle adjusters. Gill also increased the suit’s safety reflective accents.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Following the company’s “Engineered for the Elements” mantra, Gill debuts the new and improved version of its Meridian X rainsuit. Made with advanced XPLORE+ technology, the re-engineered jacket and bibs provide a waterproof rating up to 40,000 mm. This is considered the highest level of waterproof protection for extreme rain and wet snow, as determined by the Hydrostatic Head (HH) test. This means the fabric can withstand a water column of 40,000 millimeters before leaking. Gill’s new suit also enhances breathability and comfort with optimal moisture vapor transmission, while ensuring durability with an abrasion-resistant fabric.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

One of the key elements of any rainsuit is the hood. A simple cinch cord may suffice for light duty, but when the sky dumps buckets and the wind challenges a feeble fit, you’ll appreciate a well-designed head covering like Gill’s next generation Vortex Hood System. Designed to stay in place, even at high speeds, the Vortex design includes three channels and air vents that manage the wind and minimize its force. The resulting “slipstream” effect ensures that the hood holds its position and does its job.
