Gear Review: Freedom Tackle Ultra Diver

WHAT IS IT?

Freedom Tackle Ultra Diver

WHAT SETS IT APART?

American Baitworks at the ICAST trade show introduced two new bait shapes, the Freedom Tackle Ultra Diver Minnow and the Freedom Tackle Ultra Diver Shad. Both feature a forward-weighted design. A cloverleaf bill guides the bait to maximum depth and keeps it there for as long as possible. The unique bill designs also create enticing actions that trigger fish after deflecting off structure.

HOW DO I USE IT?

The Ultra Diver Minnow comes in two sizes: Model 75 (3-inch, 3/8-ounce) that reaches 10-plus feet; and Model 105 (4-inch, 5/8-ounce) that reaches 14-plus feet. The Ultra Diver Shad has two models: Model 65 (2 1/2-inch, 3/8-ounce) made to reach 12-plus feet; and Model 80 (3 1/4-inch, 7/8-ounce) which hits 20-plus feet. The Ultra Diver 75 Minnow and 65 Shad carry No. 2 black nickel hooks, while the 105 Minnow and 80 Shad have No. 4s. The Minnow is available in 14 colors and the Shad comes in 16 colors.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Freedom Tackle built these baits to quickly reach their stated depths and that starts with the bait’s surface posture. At the end of a cast, the forward weighting tilts the Ultra Diver’s face downward, so it’s perfectly postured when the angler starts the retrieve. Each bait boasts sturdy reliability thanks to a two-piece sonic-welded body and a seamless one-piece bill design.
