Frustrating fishing for Benton

Drew Benton started in a patch of lily pads where he had located three good fish on beds during practice. But over an hour later, he’s yet to boat a one of them.

“Really having a hard time figuring out what the heck is going on,” said Benton to the LIVE MIX audience. “I’ve never had this hard of a time getting one to bite that I’ve started on, especially on this lake.”

Benton noted that the bedding bass on Santee are typically very aggressive. In the past, if he just got a bait in front of one, it would bite. The foggy and cloudy conditions aren’t helping.

“These things just aren’t aggressive this morning. They’re still around, I’m seeing them. But we’re just kind of blind fishing right now. The beds themselves are really hard to see, even when the sun is out. So you just gotta kind of pick a lily pad close to them and cast to it.”

The frustration is building for Benton, as other bass run through his mind while he waits these out.

“It’s about to drive me nuts. I just want to run somewhere and catch one. But they’re liable to be acting the same way there.”

Though Benton can’t put his finger on exactly what’s going wrong, he’s not in a bad position. Only three anglers have broken the 10 pound mark on BassTrakk, and Benton is within casting distance of three bass that would weigh-in that much or more. But getting them to bite has proven difficult so far.
