Pickwick Lake, which has been the venue for six pro level Bassmaster events as well as several B.A.S.S. Nation championships recently, is known for multi-species and numbers. “Pickwick is more magical than anywhere else on the Tennessee River system in March,” said first-year Elite Justin  Atkins, who lives in Florence. “You get the trifecta of bass opportunities with big largemouth, big smallmouth and big spotted bass.”

The year before, Kevin Short won the Elite there with 75-1, catching two 6-pound largemouth on the final day. In 1998, Mark Menendez, who is in this year’s field, won the Alabama Top 100 with 60-3.

Randy Pierson also has fond memories of Pickwick. In 2018, he won the Nation title to vault into the Elites. He benefitted from rains and the TVA pulling water from Wilson and creating current throughout Pickwick.

Pickwick, which ranked 13th in Bassmaster Magazine’s Best Bass Lakes of the Decade in 2020, provides great bass habitat for both largemouth and smallmouth in the middle and lower reaches. A recent Alabama Bass Trail event was won with 27 pounds, and there were 20 bags over 20 pounds.

He said prespawn bass should be staging deeper but fish will be caught shallow on jigs, crankbaits and vibrating jigs.
