With a maximum depth of 450 feet and averaging 200 feet, Carters Lake is the deepest lake in Georgia. The lake, which has 62 miles of shoreline and no private development, is named for 19th century inhabitant Farish Carter, a regional business mogul.

Being in the same region of the Appalachian Mountains as Lake Chatuge, Carters is similar in both geography and being inhabited mostly by largemouth and spotted bass. Carters is considered the finest spotted bass lake in the state.

Construction of Carters dam took 15 years and was finished in 1977. It flooded the Coosawattee River, and along with it a popular whitewater run. Author James Dickey based his 1970 book-turned-movie <em>Deliverance</em> on an experience he had during a trip to visit the river before it was gone forever.

On Tuesday’s first day of competition, 16 anglers will fish for a limit of five bass over the 12-inch minimum. The field will be filled with Elite anglers outside of the 35 automatic berths in the Toyota Angler of the Year point standings, excluding any who have already qualified for the 2019 Bassmaster Classic.

Chad Pipkens, who is 44th in the AOY standings, will be among the 16 anglers competing. He couldn’t secure the win he needed in last week’s  Bass Pro Shops Opens Championship. That means he left Missouri’s Table Rock for the 660-mile ride to Carters Lake to get there in time for Monday’s practice day.

There is only a takeoff (7:45 a.m. ET) and weigh-in (4:15 p.m. ET) on Day 1 Tuesday, and the top 12 move on to match play the next three days. B.A.S.S. will still headquarter here, but after Day 1 the anglers will head to their spots before receiving the call for lines in. All the fish will be weighed and released on the water, and Bassmaster LIVE will follow the action all four days.

With weights zeroed, the first three of the six head-to-head matches will go out for a morning session, 8-11 a.m. ET, and the other three matches will be in the afternoon, 12:30-3:30 p.m. ET. The morning and afternoon matches will be inverted for Thursday’s competition, with six anglers winning matches based on their two-day combined weight.
