Guck’s seven Classic Tulsa eats

Welcome to Tulsa, and the 46th Bassmaster Classic. My name is Alan McGuckin. The folks I feel closest to call me “Guck.” I want you to feel at home here in our city. So I thought I’d suggest seven of my favorite Tulsa eateries near weigh-in at the BOK Center.

First, like you, bass fishing is my passion.

I’m deeply blessed to make a living as a marketing dude in the fishing industry. It’s a career I’ve treasured for 21 years. I work for Dynamic Sponsorships and live in the Tulsa area, but I’m on the road 100 nights a year chronicling the world’s top bass pros -so I understand the comfort of finding great local eateries when you’re in a town you’re unfamiliar with.

Try starting your Classic mornings with an incredible breakfast at Brookside by Day. Located 3.5 miles from the BOK Center. Erin and Katy will take great care of you, but if you want to be entertained by a Tulsa legend – ask for Jeb – he’s even more animated than their fruit and nut waffles.

If you’ve never had BBQ for brunch – here’s your chance. It’s called Burn Co. – and I’d say it’s been the most talked about eatery in Tulsa the past year. Get there early! Folks line-up at 10:00 a.m. to eat heavenly smoked meat prepared on Tulsa-based Hasty Bake grills.

This photo was taken at 10:30 last Saturday morning. The weather was 65 and sunny – and there were at least 100 people already in line. Again – get there early! They sell-out of food fast.

The owner Adam is rich with enthusiasm. He greets customers, and thanks them for their patience – as they wait for him to unlock the door. This is a lunch spot. Not a dinner spot. Or like I said earlier – a “BBQ brunch” spot.

Ti Amo has been one of Tulsa’s top Italian restaurants for years. I had two women tell me this is their #1 favorite place to eat in downtown – and it’s about three long casts from the BOK Center.

I’m known for my love of great burgers and cold beer – and I’ve probably consumed more of both at The Brook than anywhere else in Tulsa the past 20 years. It’s housed in an old movie theater. They feature huge portions – so considering sharing. Hand-cut fries are equal in quality to the efficient servers at The Brook.

Sisserou’s is fairly new to me – but a trip here last month with Team Toyota’s Mike Iaconelli was fantastic. Jerk Chicken is a signature dish, along with Oxtail Stew. Sound weird? Don’t worry, “Ike” and myself both rated this place an “A” – and the Bacardi and Cokes were refreshingly sweet too. This is also very near to the BOK Center.

Tulsans love their Tex Mex food, and El Guapo’s may very well win the popular vote in that category. Yes, the margaritas are huge, the food is top notch, and a seat on the open-air third floor porch during a mild-weathered Classic day is highly recommended. It was 65 and sunny when I shot this photo, and the rooftop was packed with locals.

Few downtown Tulsa eateries are as famous as McNellie’s Public House. When you have 60 beers on tap, plus 250 more bottled varieties from all over the globe, it’s hard not to be popular. The burgers and sweet potato fries are a hit at McNellie’s – located just 9 blocks from the BOK Center. Ask for Dru – the sweet gal in the photo with me.

Lefty’s on Greenwood is my new favorite Tulsa sports bar. Lefty’s features super easy parking, a laid-back atmosphere, and a very friendly staff. Ask Chef Lance to prep you the buffalo chicken mac ‘n cheese that my fishin’ buddy Mitchell Webb made famous. If you can hang around long enough – you might grab a home run ball from the Tulsa Drillers baseball stadium across the street.
