5 Favorites: Crews’ boat snacks

Competing in his 17th season on the Bassmaster Elite Series, John Crews is one of the most experienced pros fishing the circuit. Starting the year on a strong note, Crews claimed his second Elite title by winning the season-opener on the St. Johns River with a wire-to-wire victory.
Essential to Crews’ consistency on the water is his attention to health and fitness. He spends a lot of time in the gym, and he’s equally disciplined on the water. For him, carrying the right snacks is just as important as the right bait color. Crews shared his five favorite boat snacks that keep his body and mind fueled for long days on the water.
Water. Hydration is key and Crews said that should start before a day on the water. He’ll consume plenty of H2O before leaving for the day so he has a head start on the process.
Crews will drink four to five bottles of water during an average fishing day. One of them will contain a powdered hydration mix for extra nutrients.
PBJ sandwiches. Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are the fisherman’s staple. Crews doesn’t mind his jelly touching the bread if he’s eating it the same day, but if he’s prepping in advance, he puts peanut butter on both pieces of bread to keep it from getting soggy.
Favoring Dave’s Killer Bread Goodseed, Crews prefers crunchy peanut butter, but smooth will suffice. He likes blackberry jelly for its antioxidants.
Protein bars for variety. For a full day of tournament fishing, Crews carries two different types of snack bars. He’ll space these out to complement his PBJ.
Snack bars with healthy ingredients give him an easy option for biting or pinching off pieces while he’s running or rigging.
Protein bars of high quality. Crews has found that 1st Form protein bars have the right mix of ingredients for his dietary preferences.
Crews said he actually enjoys Cliff Bars in the White Chocolate Macadamia flavor, but the fact that the package shows a sponsored athlete that shares his first name doesn’t hurt.
Apples. Variety is the spice of life and Crews typically packs a couple different types of apples. Red delicious, ambrosia and honey crisp are some of his favorites.
Apples with other snacks. Crews stresses that apples are only included in his practice days when he has more flexibility for eating. There’s no way to quickly consume an apple so he won’t tie up his hands that long during competition days.
