Bass Times: The argument for recreational angling

Many of those now making decisions regarding the future of recreational angling in this country have little information upon which to base those decisions. And the fire-drill mentality that requires a national policy for management of our oceans, coastal waters and the Great Lakes within 180 days allows little time for learning.

The blue-green threat

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Golden algae is the killer of fish. Since the first documented die-off in 1985 on the Pecos River in Texas, it has killed millions of fish.

B.A.S.S. angler John Murray’s “The One that Got Away”

My one that got away happened during a 2007 Bassmaster Major at Oneida and Onondaga Lakes. It was the first round of the finals, so there were only 12 of us fishing the whole course. I had qualified fifth by throwing a 1/2-ounce football jig on Oneida Lake. After Oneida, we moved the whole tournament over to Onondaga Lake, which none of us had ever been to before.

How-To

Off-the-wall jigs

Football jigs grabbed national headlines when Bassmaster Elite Series pro Mike McClelland used a Jewel Heavy Cover football jig and Zoom Baby Brush Hog to lap the field at the 2006 installment of the Sooner Run.

How-To

Early pre-spawn lures

As far as I'm concerned, this is your best chance to catch the biggest smallmouth of your life. But before we talk about that, I want to say something about safety.

Preparation is paramount

One of the mantras that I live by is that preparation is more important than game day. Usually that means putting in your time on the water scouting before cutoffs and then buckling down during the actual practice days.
