Scharphorns win Michigan CastingKids

Hunter and Shianne Scharphorn are Michigan's best flippers, pitchers and casters, based on their performance in the state's CastingKids competition.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. — For cousins Hunter and Shianne Scharphorn, the ability to flip, pitch and cast must be in the genes. The pair won their respective age divisions at the Michigan CastingKids Championship, April 29.

Both are members of the Macatawa Bay Junior Bass Club. Hunter won the 12- to 16-year-olds age group, and Shianne won the 6- to 11-year-olds age division.

Bass Pro Shops in Auburn Hills hosted the contest, which began with a qualifier. “As the kids started to show up and register,” said Barry Narrin, Michigan B.A.S.S. Federation Nation youth director, “you could see their excitement start to build. … As I called for the first contestants to come forward to compete, the section of the store we were in got so quiet, you could hear a pin drop.

“All the competitors are winners in our book, and they all did a great job,” Narrin continued. Narrin had several Michigan B.A.S.S. Federation Nation members helping that day, including Paul Sacks, Mason Narrin and Tim Hahn.

Championship contenders each won a discount card from Bass Pro Shops and multiple prizes and gift cards provided by the Michigan B.A.S.S. Federation Nation.
