The Bassmaster Elite Series will bring its 11th tournament of the season — the Champion's Choice presented by Ramada Worldwide — to Oneida Lake out of Syracuse, N.Y., as the 2008 Bassmaster Elite Series season comes to a close.
It comes as no surprise that Patrick Sébile's very first memory involves fishing. He'd hooked a six-pound carp on a cane pole and the fish pulled so hard, his uncle had to take the pole and help him land the fish.
Every angler I've spoken to recently about this week's Elite tournament on Lake Erie sounds anxious for the event to begin, and I think it's because the fishing is so phenomenal, not because they're ready for this season to end. Erie is all about smallmouth, of course, and what bass fisherman wouldn't look forward to a week at the best smallmouth fishery in the world?
While bluegill and shad constitute the majority of bass' finned fare, there are other fishes that a hungry largemouth won't pass up. Some are specific to certain regions. Gobies, for example, account for nearly ninety percent of smallmouth bass' diet in Lake Erie, but you'd be hard pressed to find a goby in Florida. The bass' diverse diet and voracious appetite are a few reasons why they are so successful most everywhere they are introduced.
BUFFALO — At all but two Bassmaster Elite Series events during the 2008 season, a professional angler has lurked among the co-angler ranks. He's even been featured on magazine covers. This year, he took home money at eight of nine tournaments in which he's competed. At the Empire Chase presented by Farmer's Insurance, he finished in second out of 100-plus co-anglers.
As he stood backstage Sunday afternoon, all Kotaro Kiriyama could think about was his terminally ill father as he waited to weigh-in on the final day of the Bassmaster Elite Series Empire Chase presented by Farmer's Insurance.
Tim Creighton wins co-angler at the tournament.
There's little doubt which Bassmaster Elite Series angler did the best job of planning for Lake Erie's Empire Chase presented by Farmer's Insurance.
For the first time during the tournament, Lake Erie this morning resembled, well, a at the Day Three launch of the Empire Chase presented by Farmer's Insurance.
