Every angler I've spoken to recently about this week's Elite tournament on Lake Erie sounds anxious for the event to begin, and I think it's because the fishing is so phenomenal, not because they're ready for this season to end. Erie is all about smallmouth, of course, and what bass fisherman wouldn't look forward to a week at the best smallmouth fishery in the world?
Shiners, Minnows and Gobies
While bluegill and shad constitute the majority of bass' finned fare, there are other fishes that a hungry largemouth won't pass up. Some are specific to certain regions. Gobies, for example, account for nearly ninety percent of smallmouth bass' diet in Lake Erie, but you'd be hard pressed to find a goby in Florida. The bass' diverse diet and voracious appetite are a few reasons why they are so successful most everywhere they are introduced.
Carnaval continues
BUFFALO — At all but two Bassmaster Elite Series events during the 2008 season, a professional angler has lurked among the co-angler ranks. He's even been featured on magazine covers. This year, he took home money at eight of nine tournaments in which he's competed. At the Empire Chase presented by Farmer's Insurance, he finished in second out of 100-plus co-anglers.
