Stephen Johnston abandoned his preferred pattern during the second day of the Bassmaster Central Open on Sam Rayburn. When the scales settled, the local guide had clinched his first Bassmaster victory with a three-day total of 57 pounds, 5 ounces.

2009 Bassmaster Northern Open #2, Winner

27-year-old Jason Knapp of Uniontown, Pa., saved his best for last, making up more than three pounds to claim his first BASS win at the Bassmaster Northern Open event on Lake Champlain with a three-day total of 56 pounds, 3 ounces.

2009 Bassmaster Northern Open #2

Chris Sumansky, of Renfrew, Pa., found 21 pounds, 5 ounces, worth of Lake Champlain bass to take the lead at the second stop of the 2009 Bassmaster Northern Open circuit. Sumansky took advantage of a week-long practice before the tournament to get re-acquainted with Champlain.

2009 Bassmaster Central Open #2

Sam Rayburn's a grass lake, so most of the fishing will be centered around bass relating to the hydrilla in the lake. There's going to be a ton of ways to catch them, from flipping hydrilla with a jig or some type of plastic, or working a topwater, wacky worm or whatever — but everything's going to be related to the grass.

The main question preceding the 2009 Northern Open tournament at Lake Champlain was the same as it is at every tournament here: Would the tournament be won with largemouth, smallmouth or a mixed bag?
