Don’t count on it

The tournament on Lake Jordan started a day late for the Texas pro, Kelly Jordon. He still isn't sure whether he got caught in a time warp, or just plain ran out of luck here during the opening day of the Berkley Powerbait Trophy Chase.

Jordan doldrums

During practice, Gerald Swindle had a monster bass flush a topwater and he managed to shake it off. Returning to the exact spot early on the first day of the tournament yielded another big bite, but when Swindle set the hook, the bass wrapped his line around an obstruction and broke off.

Alabama sky

As I sit on the dock and write this, I can see and hear 12 of the best of the best race back and forth across Lake Jordan, allegedly chasing Bass. In fact, they chase themselves, and what lies inside.

Mother lode

Kelly Jordon feels the trouble with Lake Jordan is that there are so many good-looking humps and ledges, but not all of them have any fish on them. He stares at his sonar screen and studies the structure that it's revealing in hopes of finding that elusive mother lode.

Michael Iaconelli, Gerald Swindle and Todd Faircloth, all considerably behind Bassmaster Angler of the Year points leader Kevin VanDam, should be considered pre-tournament favorites if going by how they fared in practice.

Most of the pros are on a merry-go-round, concentrating on a 1/2-mile area within sight of each other at Mitchell Dam. The tightness of the area is because of the current the dam is expected to create during the two days of competition.

2009 Elite Series Postseason

To wrap up this Elite Series season, the Toyota Trucks Championship Week introduces new standings, new goals, new water and a new format.

2009 Postseason Picks

Picking the final winner of this year's Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year title should be easy, since only a dozen anglers remain eligible. The problem is, none of the 12 has anything to lose, and everything to gain.

2009 Elite Series Champion’s Choice

The most interesting aspect of this final Elite tournament of the 2009 season, the Ramada Champion's Choice at Oneida Lake, is that only 12 anglers have something to lose while the remaining 86 each have something to gain. We have finally reached that point at which all the marbles are on the line.

Follies, frauds and hoaxes, part 2

In this edition of "Follies, Frauds and Hoaxes" we cover four notable runs at the largemouth bass world record. In the 77 years since George Perry set the bar at 22 pounds, 4 ounces, dozens of anglers have laid claim to a fish that weighed more. None have been able to substantiate their claims; some haven't even tried. Here are a few more of the most notable.
