Kanowski wins Australian championship

LAKE SOMERSET, Queensland — Steve Kanowski won the Megabass B.A.S.S. Australia Nation Championship, Sept. 11-13, on Australia’s Lake Somerset. He qualified to represent his country in the 2015 Old Milwaukee B.A.S.S. Nation Championship.

“What a way to finish the most epic year of bass tournaments Australia has ever seen,” said Drew McGrath, president of the Australia B.A.S.S. Nation, “with Steve Kanowski taking out the championship with a great 3.02-kilogram bag in the final session. Coming from fifth position, Steve went out with big bass on the mind and swung for the fences, landing the largest bag weighed in by pro for the entire tournament and snatching victory from local guru Steve Otto.”

The bite was tough at Lake Somerset, with weather changes preventing the tournament from becoming the slugfest anglers thought it would be.

“The ever confident but quiet demeanour of Steve is a testament of his ability to analyze the situation and adjust to all circumstances,” said McGrath. “This personality trait allows him to negotiate his way through a tournament cool, calm and collected, and even with the extremely tough bite, he just seems to put the bass into the boat, one after the other.”

Garry Harmen won the co-angler division of the championship with 7.32 kgs.

Keep up with Kanowski’s trip to the championship on the Australia B.A.S.S. Nation website and on the chapter’s Facebook page. He will leave Australia at the end of October for the Nov. 5-7 tournament in Monroe, La.
