Gear Review: Strike King Chick Magnet

WHAT IS IT?

Strike King Chick Magnet

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Tracing its roots to the hills of East Tennessee, Strike King’s newest introduction, the Chick Magnet, is a flat-sided crankbait based on the handmade balsa design of master lure carver Marion “Tip” Tipton. Modern computer-engineered methods bring efficiency, but Strike King stayed true to Tipton’s foundational design, which created a tight, thumping retrieve. The result lives up to the name Chick Magnet for its ability to attract the big girls.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Measuring 2 1/4 inches and weighing 7/16 ounce, the Chick Magnet’s thin circuit board lip allows it to dive fast and emit the erratic action that triggers bites. Traditional lightweight flat-sided crankbaits area hard to cast — distance and accuracy — while the durability is usually pretty low. Strike King overcame these drawbacks while maintaining the action of a balsa bait by precisely measuring the bait’s ABS plastic density and buoyancy. The bait comes in 13 colors, including “Tip’s Special.”

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Bass bite in cold water and bass bite in dirty water, but combining the two gives what anglers know of as the kiss of death. Not necessarily impossible, but it’s definitely a super-difficult scenario. Add a high level of fishing pressure and you really need something that’ll not only get their attention, but talk ‘em into biting. Old school flat-sided crankbaits have a history of getting the job done, and infusing this new bait with a heavy shot of tradition makes it instantly relatable.
