JAMES RIVER, Va. — Rick Clunn of Montgomery, Texas, claimed his fourth Classic crown on Aug. 25, 1990.
He charged from almost 10 pounds behind to win the 20th Bassmaster Classic with a three-day creel of 34 pounds, 5 ounces.
On the final day, Clunn weighed in 18-7, the heaviest creel brought to the scales during any of the James River Classics.
Clunn's tactic was to crank cypress trees along the mouths of four lower James tributaries, a pattern he discovered during the first Classic at this location.
His experiences during the first James River Classic led him to design a lure to use under the conditions he found — the RC1 cedar crankbait by Poe's.
• Clunn mounted the greatest comeback in Classic history to claim his fourth championship. Going into the final day, he was in 10th place and 9-10 out of the lead.
- BASS legend Hank Parker retired after the 1990 Classic.
