Stand-up assist for kayak bass fishing

We made a stand-up assist rope that doubles for dragging the yak for about $10. Materials are a 3/8-inch nylon rope (which dries fast), a 12-inch piece of 1-inch tubing and a stainless-steel carabiner. Heat-shrink tubing added before tying knots makes the assist strap neater.

Clip the carabiner to your yak’s front handle (my Old Town Predator’s thick, molded-in handle needed an extra rope loop for the carabiner) and, while sitting in the yak, adjust the tube handle on the rope so you must bend forward to reach it, which keeps your weight over the spot you will stand.
