Gear Review: Humminbird Ice Helix 5

Plucking big bass through an eight-inch hole is a great way to spend the winter months, and the Humminbird Helix 5 makes it even easier.

What is it?

Humminbird Ice Helix 5

What does it do?

The compact, high-definition unit enables anglers to navigate lake contours through the ice.

What sets it apart?

New for the 2016 ice season, the Humminbird’s Ice Helix 5 Sonar/GPS delivers three very useful technologies in one unit. The high-speed, high-definition LCD eliminates guesswork with a digital read-out showing exact depth. Precision GPS helps anglers locate and return to productive spots, while implementing optional lake-map contours through the use of LakeMaster or Navionics mapping systems (micro SD) that provide tremendous detail while on the ice.

How do I use it?

Whether used in the portable soft-side case, attached to an ATV/UTV or on a snow mobile, the Helix 5 implements on-ice functionality that generates valuable information to help put more fish on the ice, even in the midst of harsh winter conditions. The 5-inch screen displays data in a 16:9 aspect ratio, which allows for split-screen interactivity making it easy to multi-task between information gathering and fishing.

Editor insight:

Having this amount of valuable information available while on the ice is exciting. But, it’s worth noting, even if ice fishing isn’t your thing, the Helix 5 works great on kayaks, canoes or as an additional unit on your bass boat throughout the year. Even if you want to be in the right spot, but are most comfortable with a traditional flasher, this thing has you covered by also offering current cartography on the same screen. Dragging big bass through the ice is a great way to pass the hard-water months of the north, and that game just became a whole lot easier!
