Gear Review: Hobie Compass MirageDrive 180

WHAT IS IT?

Hobie Compass MirageDrive 180

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Billing the Mirage Compass line as one of its most versatile selections, Hobie now offers these angler-friendly kayaks with MirageDrive 180, which allows the user to move forward and backward with full power. With the pull of a lever, move in either direction for prompt response to fishing opportunities or navigational needs. For tandem kayakers, Hobie’s Mirage Compass Duo is now enhanced with one MirageDrive 180 (aft) and one MirageDrive GT (forward).

HOW DO I USE IT?

The MirageDrive 180 features Hobie’s ST fin design and shape, which yields optimal efficiency through the water and helps the fins shed grass and other entanglements. Also, the Kick-Up feature ensures that fins break away upon contacting underwater obstacles and return to operational position with the stroke of the pedal crank. The ARC cranks offer convenient push button adjustment. Hobie’s Camo color option exclusively features premium Turbo Fins — a longer design for greater speed, response and propulsion efficiency.

HOW MUCH?

$2,349 ($2,499 for camo)

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

From backing away from suddenly spotted bed fish, to distancing ourselves from moccasins or low-hanging hornet nests, the ability to back up with full speed and efficiency makes a huge impact. Even when you’re not facing an urgent or dire situation, moving into and out of tight spaces promotes time management and effective presentations. By including the MirageDrive 180 in the Compass Duo, Hobie did right by family/kayak pals who like to hit the water in pairs.
