Gear Review: Daiwa EXIST Spinning Reel

WHAT IS IT?

Daiwa EXIST Spinning Reel

WHAT SETS IT APART?

It’s not a “beginner” reel, but many budget-conscious anglers grinding through those critical foundational years dream of the day when reality justifies the investment in high-end tackle. And when you’re ready, Daiwa’s new EXIST offers an impressive level of performance, weight reduction and rotation, with attractive designs for freshwater and inshore anglers. With gear ratios of 4.9:1, 5.2:1, and 6.2:1, this reel is made with interchangeable right- and left-handed versions.

HOW DO I USE IT?

Built with a Magnesium MQ Frame (single piece, which allows more gear space and promotes greater torque and power), this reel includes the all-new EXIST Air Drive System with ZAION Air Drive Rotor, Air Drive Bail, Air Drive Spool, and Air Drive Shaft. Daiwa’s exclusive high-density carbon with anti-corrosion properties, ZAION offers a material that’s lighter and tougher than magnesium. That’s how Daiwa makes the EXIST Air Drive Rotor 15% lighter, with a screw-less design, flush surface, increased rigidity and a lighter rotation, which minimizes turning resistance.

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

Daiwa’s advanced engineering has yielded incredibly light reels in sizes: 2000 (5.3 ounces), 2500 (5.6), 3000 (6.2), 4000 (7.1) and 5000 (7.6). I recently had an opportunity to hold the EXIST and it literally felt like a movie prop, making it hard to imagine there was actually anything inside. That’s a testament to precision engineering and creative use of space, or in this case, the opening thereof. Daiwa’s Advanced Tournament Drag (ATD) system provides a maximum of 22 pounds of drag pressure in the 3000, 4000, and 5000 sizes. The 2000 and 2500 sizes offer 11 pounds.
