Gear Review: St. Croix Bass X Rods

WHAT IS IT?

St. Croix Bass X Rods

WHAT SETS IT APART?

Five years ago, St. Croix made a statement by introducing Bass X, a lineup of affordable, high-performance, handcrafted bass rods. Since that debut, the company has sought to bolster this budget-friendly collection with insight gained from more recently released rod families, like Victory and Legend Xtreme. Today’s St. Croix Bass X rods boast improvements in technology, components and an attractive Raw Carbon finish with contrasting hot accent colors

HOW DO I USE IT?

The newly redesigned Bass X Series grows from 14 to 16 models, with spinning and baitcasting rods covering a range of baits, from a 1/8-ounce drop shot to an 8-ounce swimbait. Foundational to the Bass X expansion is a new blank, made with premium SCII carbon for increased flexural strength and lighter weight. It’s also bolstered by St. Croix’s Fortified Resin System (FRS) technology, which keeps carbon fibers properly aligned. Features include model-specific SeaGuide NHOOK, THOOK or Kigan Custom hook keepers, two coats of Flex-Coat with slow cure finish and a new skeleton-style reel seat that improves balance in the hand and allows direct contact with the blank.

HOW MUCH?

$120 to $150

ANGLER’S INSIGHT:

A key feature of St. Croix’s improved Bass X rods are the new hybrid guide trains, which combine SeaGuide Aluminum Oxide guides with SeaGuide Atlas Performance stainless steel guides for reduced weight and noise, along with greater performance using braided line. Designed without inserts, these guides deliver dependable performance that accommodates larger diameter knots linking braid to monofilament or fluorocarbon leaders with minimal noise and resistance. Boosting the value, Bass X rods are backed by a five-year St. Croix warranty with Superstar Service.
