Gear Review: Simms Solarflex Hoody

What is it?

Simms Solarflex Hoody

What sets it apart?

Clearly cognizant of what anglers need and value, this 6.5-ounce shirt was designed for comfort and performance. Simms created the lightweight Solar Flex Hoody from 100 percent polyester fabric with its proprietary COR3 technology, which boasts UPF 50. Quick drying and odor-resistant, this garment features flat-seam construction that delivers a plush next-to-skin feel. Combining traditional fit with technical performance, this shirt has all the tools to keep you in fishing form, even under swampish conditions.

How do I use it?

Simms ensures unrestricted movement with a Raglan-sleeve design — a solid piece of material extending to the collar, as opposed to a separate sleeve sewn onto the body of the garment. This means more flexibility for casts, flips, pitches and skips without feeling the need to shake your shoulder or tug at the sleeve fabric for a more relaxed fit. Available in sizes S-XXL, the Solar Flex Hoody comes in Blue Harbor, Hex Camo Sterling and River Rapid White.

Angler’s insight:

Lightweight performance shirts have become the norm for many in the fishing industry because they offer the ideal blend of comfort and mobility. The Solar Flex Hoody brings plenty of both, but I’m particularly fond of the hood. Not only can you block that neck-burning, headache-prompting sun, you can flip the hood over your hat to block peripheral glare. And how ‘bout those swarming gnats that challenge your focus? Well, the hood is no bug screen, but it greatly blocks the intrusion. (Tip: If you don’t like mixing sunscreen and insect repellant, lightly spray your hood with the latter and the fabric holds the bug-irritating scent close to your face.)
