Gear Review: AFTCO Women’s Hydronaut Jacket

What is it?

AFTCO Women’s Hydronaut Jacket

What sets it apart?

Drawing upon its well-established pedigree in well-conceived, angler-friendly apparel, AFTCO has redesigned the Hydronaut waterproof rain jacket (Best in Category winner at ICAST 2018) with a cut that more comfortably works for women anglers. Many outerwear items are billed as unisex, but AFTCO’s adjustments should be well-received by female anglers that have made do by wearing jackets that favor male dimensions. Designed for all-day wear, the jacket features a two-layer, 100% nylon shell with 100% polyester lining with brushed tricot handwarmer pockets.

How do I use it?

The Women’s Hydronaut jacket includes a SpeedVent hood with a double articulated storm flap that’s designed to stay in place, even during high-speed runs. The 30K waterproof rating with fully taped seams and double cuffs keep the water on the outside. The jacket also has a molle system camera mount pocket, covered vertical zip chest pockets for easy access, top entry pouch pockets, D-rings and a rear buckle waist cinch

Angler’s insight:

Having loaned my wife my rain gear and seen her struggle with not only the fit, but also the comfort, I can see how AFTCO’s investment in women’s design will make those damp and/or cold days on the water more bearable. From experience, I know my wife appreciates comfort points such as the handwarmer pockets and especially the SpeedVent hood. I’ve never worn a hair clip, headband or Scrunchie, but I’m told it’s a real bummer when one of these accessories goes flying off your head. So, thanks to AFTCO for preventing such mishaps.
