Gear Review: AFTCO Reaper Hoodie

What is it?

AFTCO Reaper Hoodie

What sets it apart?

Most anglers have a lot of hoodies in their closet, and they’ll instinctively reach for this iconic garment when an extra layer of warmth is needed under rain gear. But AFTCO has introduced a feature-heavy technical hoodie that takes this tried-and-true design to a higher level of performance. Worn as-is, or tasked as a layering piece, the Reaper brings nearly jacket-level detail to what has traditionally been a mostly straightforward category.

How do I use it?

Made of 100 percent poly bonded microfleece treated with AFTGUARD stain release, the Reaper’s spacious hood features a cinch shock cord anchoring system that simplifies the snugging and loosening that can be a bit cumbersome with traditional string-tied models. This hoodie includes a face/neck warmer with laser cut ventilation built into the hood. Raise it when you need it, collapse when you don’t. Other features include underarm laser cut ventilation, thump loops and Blocky Tapey pocket closures, which snap together something like Leggos. Sizes S – XXXL are available in Gray Heather, Charcoal Heather and Navy Heather.

Angler’s insight:

AFTCO nailed it with this hoodie. The Reaper rolls a lot of functionality into an outerwear item than we tend to regard as simply utilitarian. I particularly like the integrated face mask for those chilly mornings when a traditional hood leaves your mouth and nose exposed to the biting air. Also, those pocket closures turn a glorified hand warmer into a serious gear space that keeps cellphones, wallets, etc., from sliding out.
