In October 1974 B.A.S.S. history happened here when the third Bassmaster Classic was held on Wheeler Lake. Joe Wheeler State Park was the venue. Upriver the 2024 Whataburger Bassmaster Elite at Wheeler Lake will be played out.
This is a high-altitude view of where it might be won. The area is known as the Decatur Flats, which run parallel to the main Tennessee River channel.
The flats are shallow — anywhere from 3 feet to 10 feet. The flats bordering the river channel provide current and current breaks for the bass to relate to. Those current breaks are formed by shellbeds and other isolated bottom objects.
