Slugfest

The weights are really starting to pile up as we make our way past the midway point of Day 1. As of noon, Ed Loughran III has the unofficial lead, with 21-12. There are 6 other anglers estimating that their current catches have surpassed 20 pounds as well. Nineteen-pound bags of smallmouth stretch back to 16th, with 26 anglers claiming to have over 18 pounds.

This all with several anglers sandbagging and 18 anglers out on the water without marshals, so not likely reporting all their catches to BassTrakk. These guys are absolutely wrecking them, with less than ideal weather conditions for the visual feeders and recently post-spawn bass weighing less than anglers had hoped.

The sun is breaking out now across much of the fishery. This should make the fishing even that much better this afternoon, as it will make it easier for the bass to see the anglers’ baits. One last note, most of the catches we’ve seen have come on dropshots looking at forward facing sonar, with the rare exception like Chris Zaldain, who is catching some of his fish on a crankbait.
