Alabama Spotted Bass

Caleb Sumrall boat flips a solid Coosa River spot to climb into third place on BassTrakk. These spotted bass, also known as Alabama Spotted Bass, flourish in the swift and fertile waters of the Coosa River. And they’ll be a big factor this week.

A lot of the focus this morning has been on catching a kicker largemouth or two shallow. But we’ll see a shift soon, as many anglers work their way out to a little deeper water to try to fill their limits with 2- to 2- and 1/2- pound spots. These bass are hard to trick into biting, but they are all along the river here.

The big ones are at the dam though, and that’s where leader Matt Herren is. Herren is fishing a soft plastic jerkbait in the tail race below Logan Martin Dam. That’s where the better than average spots can be found in larger numbers. These 3-pounders equate to 15- pound bags, where a limit of five spots further down river top out at 12- to 13- pounds this time of year. In the pre-spawn, when the bass are full of eggs, those weights go up across the fishery.

Right now, Herren is doing what he wants to do with a few solid spots in the boat. And he’s already talking about heading down lake to fish the grass for a big largemouth as soon as he can boat a couple more chunks here.
