A surprising variety

Championship Sunday has started off with a decent amount of action. Joey Cifuentes is still out deep, having caught two small keepers so far, a caliber of fish that we have rarely seen him get bit by this week. Tyler Rivet has made it to his shallow magic-making pocket, nothing to report yet in the way of fish catches, however. The best bass we’ve seen boated this morning came by way of Pat Schlapper, Derek Hudnall, and Kyoya Fujita.

It’s been interesting to see how these anglers are catching them. Derek Hudnall has been doing what we would have probably expected to see more of, fishing a shallow 60-yard stretch. But he is throwing a jerkbait as opposed to a power fishing bait that you might have thought he’d have been fishing with. Schlapper is throwing a jerkbait as well, out a little deeper. And Fujita has a spinning rod in hand, twitching a finesse bait shallow. Each of these three anglers has a 4- pounder in the boat already.
