Zona’s smallmouth analysis

Long before he became an expert and respected TV analyst during the ESPN Outdoors period and now Bassmaster LIVE, Mark Zona was equally impressive with his tournament skills.

Back in the day Z dominated tournaments in Michigan and throughout the Midwest with his smallmouth catching skills. All that said he laid out an interesting analysis of what’s to come on the Upper Mississippi River.

“This is largemouth weather. Smallmouth like to see what they eat and this rain and cloud cover will take out that factor.”

What’s more, when the cloud cover finally gives way to sunny skies (or clearer skies) another factor will come into play.

“The main river is where the most unstable water will be and that’s also where most of the smallmouth population lives.”

That said, the current will be much stronger and make boat control and lure presentations a big challenge out on the Big Muddy.

“It’s also the debris and junk that will be coming down river,” he added. “That will make lure presentations even tougher.”

No doubt, based on that expert analysis the smallmouth bite will likely suffer the most.
