Will fishing conservatively haunt Lefebre?

BASSTrakk shows Dave Lefebre with zero bass in the livewell and in 22nd place. That is newsworthy since he finished yesterday in 4th place.

Is he worried? Probably. But don’t give up yet on this tour veteran.

Lefebre has high confidence in his area. He’s fished it three days and counting, learning as he goes.

Lefebre commented earlier this morning about holding out from casting at some of his key spots, the “juice” as the pros call those. The comment was prompted by the presence of Fred Roumbanis, a close friend, who moved into the area this morning.

“What I’m trying to do is spread out my key spots to stay productive over a four-day tournament.”

That is a statement laced with serious irony.

Fishing conservatively has haunted Lefebre before, as recently as this very time last year.

That happened at the Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Elite at Wheeler Lake in late April.

What Lefebre regreted the most was not swinging for the fences from the start. He led the tournament on Days 2 and 3, then got beat on the final day by Takahiro Omori. Final score: Omori with 81-6 and Lefebre with 77-3.

At Wheeler, Lefebre was in the hunt from the start with an area to himself. The area was big, had abundant spawning habitat. All the ingredients for a place to stay and win a four-day tournament were there. Sound familiar?

It should. That perfectly describes the area where Lefebre is fishing here on The Rez.

All of the above makes me wonder if the thought has occured to him about what happened this time last year.
