Wheeler: It’s a sprint to the finish

Jacob Wheeler is dialed into his game just like he was last February at Cherokee Lake. That was where he won his first Bassmaster Elite Series event of the year.

Wheeler lost the lead after Day 1 but he’s very confident in what can be done here. After all, this is Toledo Bend.

“Toledo Bend is a unique lake where you can catch a big bag and make a big comeback. Elsewhere you need to stay consistent. “

Wheeler landed in the lead with a 25-pound limit on Day 1 and then dropped to seventh place on Day 2 after weighing 4 bass for 11-1. Should Wheeler crack another 20-plus pound bag, and that is possible here, he will be back in contention.

“It’s just all about slowly going in and catching a couple of key bass and then just shooting par on the other days.”

“Anybody in the Top 10 can come back and win,” he continued.

“You’ve got to go back out there, put your head down, and realize this is a marathon, not a sprint,” he said about his upcoming plans.

Wheeler lost the lead and is quite happy where his name is on the scoreboard.

“Being in the lead means lots of weekend pressure, locals following you around and fishing your areas,” he said. “At least I can calm down, get away from some of that pressure, and get back out there and catch a big lead and slide under the radar.”
