Weekender tip: don’t overreact

This morning and yesterday Chris Lane lost a 6- or 7-pounder on topwater lures.

By his own admission he lamented an easily forgotten rule of topwater fishing.

That is resisting the urge to set the hook.

“When I get to a key area I just want to turn my head the other way.”

What he means by that is giving the bass time to take the lure in mouth, clamp down on it put resistence on the rod.

“You can’t overreact and that’s easy to do.”

Lane’s advice: “Let them take the bait and don’t set the hook and until you feel the fish on.”
