Waiting on the heat

It’s cold … 40 degrees … and the bite is slow, slower than yesterday. Last night’s dip into the low 30s might be the reason why. We are hearing frequent comments from the guys on Bassmaster LIVE about waiting for the afternoon bite.

Chad Pipkens just told the audience that 1 p.m. seems to be the beginning of the bite window.

“I think by then it gets the water warm enough to stimulate the bass activity and they push the bait on top,” he said.

In the meantime, it’s all about scrounging around, looking to put a few keepers into the livewell until the feeding period begins. The fish are scattered, and it seems to take a rise in temperature for them to school up, and become the predators they are.

When it does, the flipping gear gets stashed and out come the frogs, as the bass become more aggressive as they feed on the bait.
