Topwater vs. drop shot

The Pipkens vs. Lane matchup will be a fun one to watch. Pipkens, the Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Michigan, is doing what he does best. That is dialing into spotted bass holding on specific isolated rock structures in strategic locations of the lake.

Lane is playing his strength and that is topwater fishing, alternating between a River2Sea Whopper Plopper and a jerkbait. Using that latter bait he just boat flipped a spotted bass weighing 4-10 from a boat slip that puts him 3 pounds, 13 ounces ahead of Pipkens. Lane’s fish is also the biggest bass of the tournament thus far.

The low light conditions are definitely setting up in Lane’s favor and it’s only 8:21 a.m. This low pressure, low light and calm morning is ideal for his chosen tactic. He is jacked and when that happens so do good things. Meanwhile, Pipkens is seeing spotted bass on his fishfinder, attempting to catch those individual fish.
