The Davis enigma

Watching Mark Davis fish for the umpteenth time this season, I'm struck by the thought of what could have been for him this year.

Davis is a little of an enigma when it comes to Arkansas anglers.

A couple weeks ago on the Delaware, Kevin Short said, "Give me anything with river in it and I'm happy." Scott Rook and Stephen Browning would echo that. Mike McClelland would, too, but not with the same fervor. Davis, though, hates river systems, especially those that flow muddy water thick enough to track a coon across it.

The proof of that is in the pudding, so to speak. He fared miserably at Dardanelle and Delaware. But it's obvious when you put him in clear water and there's even a hint of fish moving around the postspawn neighborhood he's the man to watch.

Swap out a clear-water lake with either of those two rivers or even a clear-water river and he's likely back in the hot seat for AOY.

As it stands now, he needs several guys above him to stumble the next few days. The chances of that happening are slim. But it's nice to see Davis back on track and not up a muddy creek without a paddle.
