The ball and chain

Michael Iaconelli is casting what he described as a “ball and chain.”

Nearby is Kevin VanDam. He is casting a lure he’s well known for using–and helped designed–along a riprap shoreline.

Near both of those powerhouse anglers are others who are using different baits as well. Edwin Evers’ boat is lined up parallel with a seawall along docks.

The key drawning card is baitfish. Some anglers are fishing the narrow opportunity of time created by the shad spawn. Others are hanging offshore where bottom structure attracts the bait and bass.

For the next hour, at least, everyone is dialed into that shad bite, regardless of the baits.

When it ends will come a change-up in the strategies of everyone involved in that bite.
