Sumrall overcomes adversity

Nothing like suffering a blown outboard motor engine on the first day of the Bass Pro Shops Bassmaster Championship. That was the fate of pro Caleb Sumrall this morning, and, of course, his co-angler William McNutt.

The two Louisiana residents were paired – Sumrall is from New Iberia and McNutt is from Bossier City – and they quickly came up with a solution. They’re now fishing from McNutt’s boat.

Sumrall just finished his rookie season on the Elite Series after earning his qualification through winning the BASS Nation Championship. The 31-year-old Sumrall came into this event in sixth place in the Central Opens points standings. The delay doesn’t seem to have bothered him too much. BASSTrakk currently shows him tied for second place on with two bass weighing a total of five pounds.
