The St. Lawrence is showing out

At Wednesday’s anglers’ meeting, Jacob Powroznik made the following prediction: “I think (the St. Lawrence River) is getting ready to show out like it’s never showed out before.”

It is doing exactly that. At 2:15 p.m., there were 24 bags weighing 20 pounds or more on BASSTrakk, topped by Matt Lee’s astounding 27-pound, 4-ounce limit. Both totals would be significantly better than anything recorded in the three previous Elite Series tournaments here since 2013.

At this point, those numbers are unofficial. But keep this in mind: I’ve never seen a weigh-in where the official number of 20-pound bags wasn’t greater than the BASSTrakk number. It’s easy to underestimate the size of these smallmouth bass, because there’s not much of a frame of reference. Even the Elite Series pros don’t see smallmouth bass like this often.
