Predicting Patterns: Feeding windows

There were 559 catches logged into BassTrakk on Day 2 of the Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at the Santee Cooper Lakes.

On Day 2, we saw the following:

Time Catches
Between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m. 10
Between 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. 71
Between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. 81
Between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. 76
Between 11 a.m. and 12 a.m. 78
Between 12 a.m. and 1 p.m. 74
Between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. 71
Between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. 57
Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. 30
Between 4 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. 11

These are extremely consistent numbers throughout the day, with no major feeding windows to point out. The lower numbers at the start and end of the day are to be expected, as anglers blast off and return to the dock in staggered flights to start and end the day. But numbers like these, so evenly spread out, indicate that the bite was solid all day long.

There was one interesting cluster of big fish caught between 11:30 and 11:49 AM on Day 2, starting with John Cox’s 5- pounder and ending with Caleb Kuphall’s 6- pound, 8- ounce bass. In just 19 minutes, the 94 Elite anglers logged 12 bass over 4- pounds on the Santee Cooper Lakes. That is a pretty impressive little flurry of big bites.

I predict we’ll see some similar windows on championship Sunday. With Day 3 being canceled, the final day of the tournament will see all 47 remaining competitors battle it out one more time as opposed to just the top 10. Look for a lot of action early, as anglers try to get back on the fish.
