Practice may not mean much, as usual

As if anyone needed it, there was further proof at Wednesday’s anglers’ meeting of how meaningless practice can be. Not worthless, mind you, just meaningless. Several of the pros used the unusual four-day practice period to concentrate Sunday on Lake Norfork, then move to Bull Shoals Lake on Monday and Tuesday, and come back to Norfork on Wednesday.

Sunday they thought Norfork was fishing better than Bull Shoals. Wednesday they didn’t know what to think.

“I wish I hadn’t gone back to Norfork today,” said Jason Christie. “It was a totally different lake. I’m going to have to start all over (Thursday).”

Further degrading any information gleaned in practice is the weather.

“We had optimal weather to fish in the Ozarks the last few days,” said Greg Hackney. “It’s been cloudy and windy. It doesn’t look like we’re going to have that during the tournament. Light winds and sunny skies – I don’t think that will make for the best conditions.”

When the fog clears, today’s forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and west winds at 5 to 10 mph with a high of 75 degrees.
