Powroznik poised for AOY move

Based on over a quarter-century of fishing experience on the Potomac River, Jacob Powroznik is poised to make a move in the Angler of the Year race. Powroznik began this tournament in third place, 52 points behind leader Gerald Swindle.

There’s probably no place that he’d rather be while in contention than the Potomac, even if it is August. Powroznik will be 38 years old on Sept. 10. He’s been fishing this river since he was 11.

“I grew up fishing on this river,” said Powroznik, who lives only 90 minutes away. “And I’ve fished with a lot of the best guys on the Potomac. So I know every nook and cranny where a bass can live.

“That being said, it’s typical August fishing. I’m going to probably have to run a bunch of places and see if I can make it happen. I’ve got some places that I promise you nobody else is going to make a cast on. Is that going to pay off? I don’t know. I haven’t made a cast on those places in practice. I’m still a little optimistic.”

At 1:30, BASSTrakk showed Powroznik in 18th place with 12-0. But the stat that stands out is his total of 21 bass caught so far today. Not that it helps in the standings, but no one else has come close to catching 21 fish on Day 1.

Powroznik thinks it will take an average of 16 pounds a day to win, maybe only 15 1/2 pounds, just because it’s August, which is probably the toughest time of the year to catch a big stringer on the Potomac River.

“This river fishes kind of like a lake in the summertime,” he said. “During the middle of the day, they just wad up in that grass. They don’t want to play. Late in the evening they come out to play around. That’s when you can catch some good ones.”
